This online course aims to provide participants with a strategy for reading and critiquing surgical and medical journal papers, with a step-by-step guide to analysing their methodology, statistics and findings.
Participants will be sent a number of recently published journal papers prior to the course to read in preparation. The emphasis of the course is on general surgery, although the generic approach to reading and critiquing papers is equally applicable to trainees in all surgical and medical specialties.
This course particularly offers preparation to those who will be taking the FRCS academic viva in general surgery and physicians studying for viva’s or research projects.
The course will be run by knowledgeable and friendly course tutors and is interactive, with ample opportunity to ask questions and gain a clear understanding of the topics covered.
Who should attend?
This course is aimed at Surgeons who are sitting their FRCS examinations in General Surgery and Physicians studying for viva’s or a research project. There will be Surgical and Medical research papers made available and discussed.
The course may be of interest to other trainees, for instance those planning to attend ST3 interviews or those who are interested in research.
Course format
The course will take the form of a workshop rather than lecture-based learning. It is split into 2 sessions which will be held over two Saturday mornings on 28 October and 4 November from 09.00 – 13.30.
All participants will be asked to present a paper and will be actively involved in discussion. Questions will be encouraged.
