Overview

This is the sixth edition of the Intercollegiate course that runs over two days. It is for trainees anticipating a career in surgery and preparing for basic surgical examinations.  Junior trainees will be expected to perform a range of basic surgical skills prior to commencing specialty surgical training. These skills are tested at the MRCS Part B OSCE Examination where trainees will be assessed on their Clinical and Procedural Skills. The course aims to teach safe operating techniques and stresses the importance of precautions for safe theatre practice.

Learning outcomes:

  • Explain the principles of good practice in theatre etiquette, knot tying, suturing, haemostasis, anastomosis, surgical diathermy and ergonomics for minimal access surgery
  • Describe correct handling and use of surgical instruments
  • Demonstrate an appropriate procedure for gowning and gloving in accordance with recommended standards of practice
  • Tie a variety of reliable knots
  • Suture a variety of tissues, including skin, bowel, vascular tissue and tendons effectively
  • Perform abscess draining and contaminated wound debridement in accordance with the basic principles of wound management
  • Demonstrate basic techniques for small bowel, vascular and tendon anastomosis 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic diathermic technique
  • Demonstrate effective management of ergonomic tissue commonly encountered with minimal access surgery
Delegates are introduced to the principles underpinning the various techniques being taught by supervised examiners.  All trainees are assessed throughout and issued with a certificate of completion with12 CPD points.
