Professor Peter Brennan will guide us through a number of important topics relating to human factors, looking at the commonality of errors in healthcare (1 in 20 hospital admissions include some form of error), never events and how wrong tooth extraction is now excluded. 

He will discuss optimising our own performance and the importance of best practice when working as part of a dental team as well as addressing burnout and how to recognise it, with notes on work life balance and ways to enhance wellbeing for the whole team.

 

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the session delegates will:

  • Recognise that error is common and 'normal' in everyday life and clinical practice
  • Have gained an understanding of the importance of optimising individual performance and that of the dental team for better patient care
  • Have an awareness of some of the factors that can lead to error including poor communication, multitasking and distraction
  • Have built on their confidence in looking out for signs of burnout in themselves and team members
