Overview

The Introduction to Mentoring course equips participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to become effective mentors. It also emphasises the personal and professional rewards inherent in guiding and supporting the development of colleagues within the healthcare sector.

The primary function of a mentor is to facilitate the growth of others, foster career advancement and pinpoint areas for skill enhancement.

Tailored for clinicians interested in engaging in professional development and nurturing the talents of less experienced colleagues, this course serves as an essential primer on mentoring fundamentals.

Who should attend?

This foundation course in mentoring is suitable for consultants and senior trainees within the healthcare sector. It welcomes anyone with a strong inclination towards mentoring or a desire to delve deeper into this pivotal role.

The course will set you on a journey to become a College Mentor

Learning outcomes

  •   To understand what mentoring entails
  • The foundation skills and processes required to mentor successfully
  •  An understanding of good practice in mentoring

Format of the course

Our introduction to Mentoring course lead Paul Edgar has developed the course which was first created in partnership with the Scottish Mentoring Network to deliver education in mentoring using a variety of teaching methods.

Delegates will firstly review online material introducing the principles of mentoring. Then, an in-person, live training session, facilitated by an experienced course lead, takes place at the College in Glasgow, to further explain both mentoring skills and mentoring conversations. To complete the course, the live session must be attended.

Following the Introduction to Mentoring course, delegates are encouraged to continue developing their mentoring skills by participating in the Mentorship programme (details will be available soon). Upon completion of the Mentorship programme, delegates are invited to mentor another Member of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, via My Mentoring
