This course serves as an introduction to Peer Support in clinical settings.
Overview
Healthcare workers experience challenging situations as part of their every day jobs. This course serves as an introduction to Peer Support in clinical settings and provides a basis in which to understand the importance of peer support in the workplace. Peer support helps practitioners cope with emotionally stressful events. Mental health and wellbeing of clinicians is important to ensure effective and safe delivery of healthcare. Emotionally supported clinicians can take better care of their patients.
This course is suitable for all designations within the healthcare sector and is open to anyone with a keen interest in peer support and those who wish to explore this important topic further.
Course format:
Candidates will review online material, introducing them to the principles of peer support, with the addition of a mandatory in-person live training session. This live session will be facilitated by fellow clinicians experienced in peer support and will cover; skills and components of a peer support conversation, skills practice and how to set up a medical peer support group at your work. - Recognising the importance of peer support
- Describing the seven key components of Psychological First Aid
- Identifying the important components of the peer support conversation and acknowledging the skills required
- Appreciating the need for self-care and the importance of looking after yourself and others
- Developing the knowledge needed to set up an effective peer support group in the workplace
