Overview

This online course aims to provide participants with a strategy for reading and critiquing surgical journal papers, with a step-by-step guide to analysing their methodology, statistics and findings.

Participants will be sent a number of recently published journal papers (e.g. BJS, Annals of Surgical Oncology, World Journal of Surgery) immediately prior to the course to read in preparation. The emphasis of the course is on general surgery, although the generic approach to reading and critiquing papers is equally applicable to trainees in all surgical specialties.

This course particularly offers preparation to those who will be taking the FRCS academic viva in general surgery. There is also an opportunity for core trainees who plan to attend ST3 interviews and also foundation trainees and medical students interested in surgical research to observe the course rather than participate.

The course will be run by knowledgeable and friendly course tutors and is interactive, with ample opportunity to ask questions and gain a clear understanding of the topics covered.

If you would like to book on as an Observer, please contact the Course Coordinator directly.

Target Audience

Those planning on sitting FRCS but also trainees at any level and medical students. Students and foundation trainees are encouraged to attend as observers.

Course Format

The course will be run over two Saturday mornings on 18 and 25 February from 09.00 – 13.30. 16 participants will be asked to present a paper each and will be actively involved, and asked questions. Observers will be able to interact via the chat session.
